Let’s talk about lying to our children.
No, I’m talking about how Fern thinks that Frida Kahlo is one of the Disney princesses, how Dora is in reality young Frida, and her brother Diego is Diego Rivera.
Or how she says “This means ‘I love you’ in sign language” while making the universal bulls-horns sign for “cuckold.” God help us if we ever travel in the Mediterranean region. Gestures like that get you beaten up outside the taverno.
So why don’t I untangle these misconceptions?
Well, mostly because I can hardly keep them straight myself. (Diego who?) But also, I have to admit that I’m intrigued by how Fern weaves a complete and novel mythology out of the threads of stories and ideas that come her way.
So for now I let her keep thinking that hedgehogs come from junipers because they’re both prickly. It might mean a lot of explaining later, but in the meantime it’s pretty damn entertaining.

“hedgehogs come from junipers, because they are both prickly” well, that’s actually better than the medieval beleif in barnacle geese. I mean, at least there is an actual connection of sorts besides “gee, I wish there were some yummy birds we could eat on fast days when we are supposed to eat fish. ” that there is some wishful science.
Wait… you mean they don’t? Oh, man, there goes my post-Thanksgiving feast idea.
When you first mentioned Frida Kahlo I had to google her.
Now you mention her again I had to google her again.
I have no memory retention skills it seems.
Hmmm… maybe I need a Frida Kahlo information page.
You should totally see the movie, by the way. Salma Hayek is scarily gorgeous when cheated on. Netflix it. Or whatever you call Netflix over there… um, Netifloucks? Y’all’re always adding vowels.
Frida Kahlo was a great artist and many women adore her because
her paintings show a high emotional richness.
Frida Kahlo was AMAZING and a great princess. The movie was awesome.
