Aww, I wanted to give Boo a hug when I read your post. We just registered my little girl for kindergarten in September. She's not encountered queen bee meanies so far, but I know it's a matter of time now that she'll be starting school. I am cringing at the thought!

@Backpacking Dad - I never saw Mean Girls for the same reason I don't see movies like Alien -- why subject oneself to that kind of horror? Besides, I expect that I'll be living through it at least once a week until senior year.

@New-Dad-Blog - Mostly, I let Boo do it -- I think, especially at this age, the last thing she needs is me whooshing in to save her by chastising the other kids. We all have to learn not to hang our self-confidence on what others think of us, right?

The mean girls terrify me. My only experience with them is as a guy, who is clearly different from them anyway and trying to figure out the inter-gender dynamic kids have going on. I have no experience with how they interact with each other when there are no boys around to muddle the social equation.

Movies like "Mean Girls" are like father horror flicks, featuring dismembered egos cast about by the hatchet-and-blush-wielding monster. Sure, it's a phase, but it's as violent and damaging a phase as the physical posturing guys do when they are younger, but the scars aren't badges.

Terrifying.

My wife recently informed me about how utterly cruel and psychologically damaging little girls can be; especially to younger ones. I had no idea. . . .

Good luck with Boo and the playground. How do you deal with kids like that?
