Feeling invisible

in San Francisco, fears, moving, whining

I was nearly hit three times by cars in the Home Depot mall south of San Francisco — twice in the same intersection. Sure, this sort of thing happens in The City, too, but mostly when drivers catch on that the annoyed shouts interrupting their cell phone conversations are coming from the crosswalk, they stop short and wave apologies and look ashamed.

Not so in Daly City, our suburban, commuter-dominated suburb. There, all three drivers who nearly became my murderers blasted blithely through the well-marked crosswalks despite my shouts. (On the plus side, I got to shout “Hey! I’m walkin’ here!” — I’ve always wanted to do that.)

So what’s the big deal, you ask? Well, I took it as an ill omen. With this move I will find myself compelled to frequently do things that I rarely needed to in the city center: drive a car, go to Home Depot (or malls at all), and visit car-centric towns.

Sorry to haver so, everyone… I’m just being a nervous Nelly.
