Gavin Newsom: Thank You V

by doodaddy on November 5, 2007

Gavin is Cool

I think he rocks. Plus, he married us, right here at city hall.

Gavin Newsom is our mayor here in San Francisco, but before you get all scared that I’m doing some Election Night Eve electioneering, you should know that my reason for thanking Gavin today is purely personal. Sure, he’s running for re-election tomorrow. But he’s also the reason I’m married.

How short the public memory! Still, you probably remember how Gavin, back on Valentine’s Day 2004, decided that no compassionate city can keep from marrying same-sex couples. Before that, marriage itself seemed distant and strange to me — I hardly knew anyone who was married, including my own parents. Then, suddenly, there were images on all the news stations of devoted, lifelong couples, including some of my best buddies, finally getting married! And it got me to thinking — well, if they’re finally allowed to marry, maybe I should think about marriage?

So I did, and through a contact Working Mom got him (the mayor!) to marry us himself. It’s all down to him. So, for today’s thank-you:

Thanks, Gavin Newsom!

Politically, he’s not quite liberal enough for me (if you can believe that!), but he’s such a great guy. He married gay couples, probably costing himself any political future outside of California. He set up a 311 phone line for all city services that’s staffed by nice people. He’s faced all sorts of personal problems in the public eye with dignity. He’s a good guy, and worth at least one of my 30 November Thank-You messages.
