I want to be a Good-Enough Mother: Are there really designer goodie bags for kids’ birthday parties?

by doodaddy on September 29, 2007

I’ve started getting a lot of interesting e-mail through the blog. First was a message titled “How to feel like a crappy parent” (at least I think that’s what it said), from an organization called the National Effective Parenting Initiative. As the pretty stock photo families informed me, the very first step to being an effective parent is signing their petition, and the second step is to join their organization for $25. Those are such important steps that the font is bigger!

And here I thought the first step to effective parenting was “No leaving the baby alone with the power tools.” But what do I know?

Thus feeling a little in doubt about my parenting skills, I was instantly drawn to the next e-mail, touting a book called Good-Enough Mother: The Perfectly Imperfect Book of Parenting. Following my usual habit of judging a book by its review, I note:

“Your kids don’t have to have the newest toys, the hand-decorated cupcakes for school, the designer jeans or latest-fad shoes.”

I think that kids with all those things are being abused pretty badly, so we’re good there.

“Goodie bags for birthday parties don’t have to come in designer bags.

Are there such things in this world as designer goodie bags? (What designers, I wonder?) We’re in worse shape than I thought.

Seriously, though, I like the attitude that a lot of the parenting “musts” just don’t matter — like, for example, the stay-at-home parent must be a mommy, for example (or that there must be a stay-at-home parent to begin with, for that matter).

Therefore, to follow the advice and cut myself some slack, I’m going to pursue being a good-enough mom (ahem!) by not actually buying or reading the book. Even though it sounds interesting.

If you get it, tell me what you think, OK?
