Pay Per Parent

by doodaddy on May 27, 2007

New York City is experimenting with a program that gives small cash grants to impoverished parents for doing things like getting their kids to school every day and not missing doctors’ appointments.

I’m all for this from a policy standpoint — apparently, it’s helped bring families out of poverty in Brazil and Mexico. And I like how it seems to reward parents who want to be good parents but are constrained by the need to hold down multiple jobs and such.

I just wish I could sign up. Still, those moments (rare as they may be) of good parenting do have a cash benefit of sorts: saving myself from future therapy bills…
